Background of the Study
Climate change is increasingly recognized as a major factor affecting agricultural productivity, particularly in vulnerable regions like Kachia, located in Kaduna State. As farmers in this area face unpredictable weather patterns, prolonged droughts, and erratic rainfall, the need for climate-smart agricultural practices has become more urgent. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) refers to farming practices designed to increase productivity and resilience to climate change, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions (Jibril & Idris, 2023). These practices include crop diversification, soil fertility management, water conservation, and the use of drought-resistant crop varieties. In regions like Kachia, where agriculture is the primary economic activity, adopting CSA is essential for sustaining food production and improving farmer resilience to climate shocks.
This study aims to evaluate the impact of CSA on farming productivity in Kachia LGA. It will explore how the adoption of climate-smart practices affects crop yields, income levels, and food security for local farmers. The study will also examine the challenges and benefits associated with CSA adoption in the region, providing a comprehensive assessment of its potential for improving agricultural sustainability in the face of climate change.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Farmers in Kachia LGA are increasingly facing challenges due to climate change, including reduced crop yields, water scarcity, and soil degradation. Although climate-smart agriculture has been promoted as a solution, its impact on farming productivity in Kachia remains unclear. This study aims to address the gap in knowledge regarding the effectiveness of CSA in enhancing farming productivity in Kachia and identify the barriers to its adoption by local farmers.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of climate-smart agriculture on crop yields in Kachia LGA.
To evaluate the effect of CSA practices on income generation for farmers in Kachia.
To identify the challenges and benefits associated with CSA adoption in Kachia LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
How has the adoption of climate-smart agriculture practices affected crop yields in Kachia?
What is the effect of CSA practices on farmers' income generation in Kachia?
What challenges and benefits have farmers experienced in adopting CSA in Kachia?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The adoption of climate-smart agriculture has led to increased crop yields in Kachia.
Climate-smart agriculture has positively impacted farmers' income generation in Kachia.
Farmers in Kachia have faced both challenges and benefits in adopting climate-smart agriculture practices.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will provide evidence on the effectiveness of climate-smart agriculture in improving farming productivity in Kachia. The findings will inform policymakers, agricultural extension services, and development organizations about the benefits and challenges of implementing CSA in this region, and how best to support farmers in adopting these practices.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Kachia Local Government Area and will examine the effects of climate-smart agriculture on farming productivity over the past five years. The limitations of the study include the difficulty of measuring the long-term impact of CSA in a region that is still transitioning to these practices.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Climate-Smart Agriculture: Agricultural practices that increase productivity, build resilience to climate change, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Farming Productivity: The output of agricultural activities, including crop yields and overall farm productivity.
Income Generation: The process by which farmers earn income from agricultural activities, including crop sales and related agricultural services.
